This Victorian Rococo chair was used by Poe's foster family, the Allans, at their Richmond home, "Moldavia." The chair was given to the Poe Museum in 1963 by Ellen Wise, whose great grandfather, Richard Barton Haxall, had purchased it at John Allan's widow's estate sale on either May 27 or May 28, 1881. According to Ms. Wise, the chair's mate was purchased at that sale by another Richmonder, but its present whereabouts are unknown. The chair's style suggests it was made sometime between 1845 and 1850, so Poe would not have been living with the Allans when this chair was in their house. The seat of the chair was recovered when it entered the Poe Museum's collection.
