Sarah Elmira Royster Shelton (1810-1888) was Edgar Allan Poe's first fiancee when he was seventeen years old, and she became his last fiancee when they renewed their engagement shortly before Poe's death at the age of forty. This daguerreotype of Mrs. Shelton was probably taken in the early 1850s, a few years after the second engagement. The photograph was donated to the Poe Museum by Mrs. Shelton's descendents in 1979.
