This bust was produced around 1900 by George Julian Zolnay, the sculptor who produced the life-sized bronze bust of Poe, which is also in the Poe Museum's collection. Although the pose of the smaller bust is similar to that of the larger one, the former shows less of the figure's torso and does not include the arms or hands. The nose on this piece has been broken, and there is a large void in the forehead. Zolnay's signature appears on the back of the base.

Known as the "Sculptor of the Confederacy," George Julian Zolnay sculpted a number of portraits of Confederate generals, including the statue of Jefferson Davis at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond.

This bust was the basis for a reproduction commissioned by the Poe Museum in 2010.
