Dr. Amasa Converse performed Edgar Allan Poe's wedding ceremony on May 16, 1836 in Richmond, Virginia. Converse was both a Presbyterian minister and the editor of the Southern Religious Telegraph. The photograph here was taken about 1860. It was given by the sitter's son, Dr. F. Bartlett Converse, to T. Pendleton Cummings, who donated it to the Poe Museum along with a lock of hair from Eliza White and a 1904 letter from Dr. F. Bartlett Converse describing Poe's wedding.
