DESCRIPTION:Join the Poe Museum for a lecture and discussion with Dr. Ryan K. Smith about Edgar Allan Poe and Richmond’s Cemeteries.  \n\n\n\nRyan K. Smith is a professor of history at Virginia Commonwealth University. He specializes in American religious history\, material culture\, and historic preservation. He received a Ph.D. in American civilization from the University of Delaware and an M.A. in history from the College of William and Mary. \n\n\n\nHis most recent book is Death and Rebirth in a Southern City: Richmond’s Historic Cemeteries (Johns Hopkins University Press\, 2020)\, an exploration of the history and recovery of the burial grounds of Richmond\, Virginia\, through the lens of race. Dr. Smith has experience in public history\, having worked at the Library of Virginia\, the Winterthur Museum\, the St. Augustine Historical Society\, and the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument\, among other institutions. \n\n\n\nBeer and wine will be available for purchase.  \n\n\n\nAttendees can enter a raffle to receive a free copy of Dr. Smith’s new book Death and Rebirth in a Southern City: Richmond’s Historic Cemeteries and a Poe Museum Membership.  \n\n\n\nWednesday\, September 14th 6pm-7:30pm at the Poe Museum. \n\n\n\nThis event is a part of our centennial celebration.
