Embark on an Unparalleled Adventure…
Amidst the endless inventiveness of Edgar Allan Poe’s oeuvre, one of his most creative stories is The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall, a story about a man who purports to fly to the moon in a hot-air-balloon of his own making. But Hans is not merely an eccentric inventor—he is also a meticulous scientist, and Poe’s presentation of Hans’s deliberations shed light on how 19th-century Americans thought about science. Find out how the Americans of Poe’s time thought about atmosphere and climate, topics as pertinent to society then as they are now.
